Yes, I said China and not countries like Japan, France, Spain, Germany or Italy that also have amazing railway systems because China has a rather unique approach in developing it's railway system and it's also huge.

Having the trains is one thing.

Getting the rights-of-way to put down the tracks they need is another matter entirely.

It isn’t that, it’s that nowadays you have to care about who owns the land or what’s on the land you want to use. It isn’t the 19th century where you can just burn, bulldoze, or shoot anything/anyone in the way.

The oil and gas industry in Texas seems to disagree.

(I coincidentally watched a documentary on the oil and gas industry in Texas yesterday and saw two people on camera whose yards have been destroyed because of pipe lines put in the ground. When the land owners started to ask questions, the industry simply said: we can do what we want, go ahead and sue us.)

Why not get there by subway? I think that on short distances and in urban areas subway lines are better than train ones.

I like to think that things will get better, both for Amtrack and private ventures.

most of Melbourne’s lines are above ground. only 3 stations are truly underground.

Flagstaff, Melbourne Central (Museum) and Parliament.

no trains run to the airport.

Amtrak’s problem is that they don’t own any rail outside of the northeast corridor.  everything else runs on freight rail and freight takes precedence.
